Bed bug control LondonIf you think you may have an infestation of bed bugs in your home then some of this information may come in useful to you before you have a bed bug treatment or if you are trying to understand more about bedbugs.

Understanding bed bugs will help in removing them from your home and prevent further bed bug infestations in your home or how to prevent getting them when travelling or holidaying for instance.

The information I am sharing is fact but I will also give you some tips that I have discovered during all my years in pest control and carrying out several bed bug treatments weekly.

Okay lets start with some facts on bed bugs.
  • A female bed bug can lay up to 300 eggs in her life time in the right conditions.
  • A bed bug will feed for between 5-6 minutes at a time. That can be one itchy bed bug bite! They move because of your body heat. Biting in tracks.
  • Bed bugs may only feed once every 3 - 8 days.
  • There are no diseases transmitted from bed bugs.
  • Bedbugs feed solely on blood.
  • Young bed bugs are translucent before a blood meal.
  • Bedbugs will nest on beds, mattresses, bedside units, carpets, any area close to the bed.
  • An adult bed bug is reddish, brownish and flat and oval. 4-5 mm in length.
  • An adult bed bug can survive for up to 12 months with feeding.
  • Bed bug eggs are small at 1mm and white and they will spread them on anything close to the bed.
  • Bedbugs will climb curtains and nest in the gather if your curtains overhang your bed.
  • Bedbugs can be picked up simply by sitting on an infested bed or sofa and will stay on you if you then leave.
  • Bedbugs excrement is black and usually you can follow their movement by following the excrement marks.
  • Bedbugs do not like heat.

Okay, now for some tips.

When on holiday or travelling, before returning home, place all of your clothing into sealed black bags and then into your case. When you get home, straight in the wash, do not put the case in your home, but in the shed. Bugs come back in cases and will crawl down the wardrobe or from under the bed if you put your case there.

If you have a bed with legs, pull the bed away from the wall and cover the legs with Vaseline.

Seal all cracks and crevices. Bed bugs will lay there eggs in them.

Wash all clothing, bedding and curtains at high temperature. Bed bugs will die in this heat.

Bed Bug Eggs

Bed Bugs eggs are small, white, oval and sticky. In this pictures they are pretty clumped. This is not always the case however, usually they will be spread out and can be laid in all sorts of places such as the rear of picture frames, bed frames, skirting boards, items under your bed. These are the reason that bed bug can be so difficult to get rid of.
